Frequently Asked Questions

General

What are common problems patients face?

People seek orthodontic treatment for a variety of reasons, including underbites, crossbites, upper front teeth protrusions, overbites, crowding, spacing, open bites, and unmatching dental midlines.

When should a child first see the orthodontist?

It’s never too early to start thinking about your future! The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orth screening at the age 7 so that you can get a good idea if there are any problems with how teeth grow and turn in.

Will my teeth straighten out on their own?

No, the space for front tooth growth is not increasing like it does in most people. With age and permanent molars coming up behind them, adults usually find that their mouth has decreased slightly from what they had when younger with all those baby biting years ahead!

Braces

Do braces hurt?

Braces are not meant to hurt but they do cause sensitivity. After certain appointments, your teeth may be sore for a few days and over-the-counter pain medications will help during these situations. Most of the time you won’t have any discomfort at all though!

Can I still play sports or practice my instrument?

Braces aren’t going to stop you from doing any of your favorite hobbies, including playing sports or practicing an instrument. You should still wear a mouthguard while cheering on the sidelines though because it can protect against injury significantly better than sore teeth!

Are there certain foods I can’t eat with braces?

Yes, certain foods will get stuck in your braces and cause discomfort (such as hard candy). We’ll discuss what you should avoid once we start treatment!

Invisalign

Do I have to leave my Invisalign aligners in all the time?

Out of the 24-hour day, you should be wearing your Invisalign aligners for at least 2-hours. You should remove your aligners while eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth.

Do I have to leave my Invisalign aligners in all the time?

While in treatment, you are free to eat whatever food your heart desires. You just need to brush before and after consuming any foods that might come into contact with the aligners so they don’t get too dirty or lost while wearing them!

How often do I have to see an orthodontist?

Your orthodontist will check on you every five to six weeks while wearing Invisalign. Check-ups allow them the opportunity not only see how treatment is going, but also make any necessary adjustments or updates before continuation.
